Backyard Remodel Part 2a

You think you are finished on a backyard project and WHAM!, you find yourself working on another major one.  It turns out the deck is no more.  3 opossums over the span of 2 months decided to make the deck underneath their personal graveyard.  I just didn’t get it.  I was through with the deck and even more through with the maintaining a jacuzzi that cost at least $30 in electricity a month.   Below are the remains of the deck….converted to furniture!  I’ll get to painting it this weekend and filling in the rest of the area with rock.

The Backyard Remodel – Finished!

After a couple years of trial and error, we finally finished the back yard!

This is the rain barrel created from a 50 gallondrum.  We created a cover to go around it for asthetics.  It provides 50 gallons of free water from the roof when it rains.

The arbor created a nice entrance into the backyard.  It was stained cherry and coated with polyurethane.  The plant holder on the side on the wall was something we had in storage for a while that was painted

The grill is a “Big Green Egg”.  I have wanted one for years and luck has it, I got one for a Christmas present.. 🙂   Larry and I built that table over the holidays.  It took only 3 hours as he’s really good with building things.

Behind the grill is the newly painted fence.  Heather worked a lot on that and other fixtures around the house.  What a difference a fresh coat of paint makes!

We laid nursery grade landscape cloth on the ground to prevent weeds from growing.  We then hired two people to haul 7 cubic yards (!) of river rock rock.  River rock was no maintenance and was the only thing that would work due to the roots of the tree popping up, shade from the tree and lack of sprinkers.

We built the picnic bench set from new and recycled wood from the deck.  My mother made the finish.  She’s really good with this type of painting technique and I could not have done a better job myself.

Many thanks to everyone that helped out.  Its very peaceful and enjoyable to be able to share it with friends and family.
